History of Video Conferencing

Video conferences have become a day to day affairs not only among businesses, but even among households. The practice has evolved rapidly, liked by many and extensively adopted into different business models. The concept of seeing the caller while talking is so popular that the greatness of its invention is often taken for granted. It would be interesting to see how it all started.

The history of video conferencing can be traced back to 1964 when visitors to the World's Fair in New York got the first glimpse of the incipient version of today's video conferencing service, a concept that was called Picturephone. It was conceptualized by AT&T, the telephone company founded by Alexander Graham Bell himself.

By 1970, the concept had become popular and much liked by all and AT&T predicted that a million Picturephone sets would be in use by 1980. But back then, the prices started at $160 per month, plus the instrument cost that was very heavy. But by mid 1080s, companies other than AT&T started releasing better versions of the instruments and a few years later, Picuretel hit the market in 1986 with heavily slashed prices. Later in the 1994, with release of CU-SeeME for Windows, video conferences started becoming available on a large scale and a decade later, its use had increased by at least a hundred fold.
